What are Probus Clubs?
Probus clubs are organisations for men and women who have
retired from their profession or business and want to maintain
a social network with others who have similar interests. Each
Probus club is sponsored by a Rotary club, although the latter's
involvement varies from country to country and the Probus
clubs enjoy autonomy once formed.
Probus clubs were first formed, as an acronym of Pro(fessional)
and Bus(iness), in the early 1920s in Canada and USA. However,
the name was fused into a different type of club in England,
and the first non-sectarian Probus club was formed there in
1966.
Today, Probus claims to have more than 300,000 members in
thousands of clubs worldwide, the largest concentration being
in Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.
Probus Club Activities
Probus club members are largely active volunteers in many
community organisations and many have formed smaller interest
groups under the Probus umbrella. This include groups for
hobbies such as fishing, sports, entertainment, bridge playing,
travel, etc.
Probus clubs typically meet once a month for fellowship and
to hear guest speakers. There are no attendance or service
requirements.
Probus Club of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor
The Probus Club of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor was chartered
during the presidency of Dr Hardeep Singh (1993-94) with Rtn
Louis Cheah providing the inspiration, motivation and the
necessary ground work. Two of its members are Rotarians of
Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja - PDG Dato' (Dr) Haji Mustapha
Ma and PP Dato' Haji Kamarulzaman bin Mohamed.
