What We Do
A Century of Service:
The Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja

Founded in 1928, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur emerged as a beacon of unity amidst Kuala Lumpur's diverse cultural landscape. With a core group of 25 members, the club quickly grew to over 80, reflecting a harmonious blend of European and Asian influences. The early days of the club were marked by a strong commitment to service and camaraderie. Weekly Rotary Lunches, a tradition that continues to this day, were held at the historic Bok House (now the W Kuala Lumpur Hotel).

Pioneering figures like Sir Andrew Caldecott and Sir Leonard David Gammans led the club, fostering a vibrant community that included prominent individuals such as the Storch brothers, Raja Tun Uda, Choo Kia Peng, Loke Choe Thye, Mungo Park, and Arumugam Viswalingam. These individuals, drawn to Rotary's principles of service above self, played a crucial role in shaping the club's legacy

history

In Kuala Lumpur's diverse cultural landscape, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur began as a symbol of unity in 1928 with 25 members, expanding to 80 members with a mix of European and Asian influences. Their focus on service and camaraderie marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.

The early pioneers of the famous club included Sir Andrew Caldecott as the first President and Sir Leonard David Gammans as the initial secretary.

In 1929, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur met at Bok House, Presently the W Kuala Lumpur Hotel. They held Rotary Lunches every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m, creating a tradition thats still on going till today. Despite a minor administrative challenge, the club's lively spirit led to the official charter reception in January 1930.

Together, they led a diverse group that included the innovative Storch brothers, Raja Tun Uda, a prominent figure in Penang, and Choo Kia Peng, a respected Federal Councillor and renowned figure in the golfing world.

The club's guests included notable figures like tin magnate Loke Choe Thye, botanist Mungo Park, and eye surgeon Arumugam Viswalingam, who were attracted to Rotary privileges and committed to community service.

Despite the rain, our spirits shone brighter than ever ✨ Nearly 120 Rotarians, families, Rotaractors and carollers gathered for a truly heart-warming Christmas Fellowship at Hangover Bistro, PJ. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the night unforgettable: • Our Christian members for opening your hearts and hosting the evening—even those who supported from near and far despite not being able to attend. • Hangover Bistro’s team and Dato’ Alvin Nigel Paul for the warm hospitality and superb venue. • Joe Jehad for the mouth-watering roast kambing that brought everyone together in joy. • President Dato’ Prakash, Michael Hegelbach & Thomas Varughese for the generous wine contributions that lit up the cheer. • Datuk Shah Ranai for the magical costumes that truly brought our “Christmas at Hogwarts” theme alive. We were especially delighted to welcome our friends from BRCR—your presence added even more warmth to the night. The rain outside may have poured, but inside we shared carols, laughter, fellowship, and the true Rotary spirit of togetherness. Nights like these remind us why we serve 🤍 #Rotary #RCKLDiraja #Fellowship #Christmas2025 #ServiceAboveSelf #Community #HogwartsTheme

At Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya today, our Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja witnessed a truly meaningful stride in community health. More than 100 individuals came forward for early cancer screening, a testament to what can happen when communities open their doors and hearts to awareness. We were honoured to collaborate with CORUM – the Colorectal Cancer Society of Malaysia, and to host a powerful trio of speakers who delivered short but impactful health talks: 🔹 Dato’ Dr. Mehesh, President of CORUM – on the importance of early detection for colon cancer 🔹 Dr. Malwinder Singh, Clinical Oncologist – on prostate cancer and breaking the stigma for men’s health 🔹 Dr. Harjit Kaur, Breast & Endocrine Surgeon – on breast cancer awareness and timely screening Their combined insights reminded everyone present that early detection saves lives and that awareness begins with education. A heartfelt thank you to the Gurdwara management for the warm hospitality, to our medical partners for standing with us, and to every individual who stepped forward for their health today. Together, we continue the mission of Project Blue Dot: bringing accessible screening to every community that needs it. If your organisation, community, or place of worship would like to collaborate with us, do reach out, let’s make early detection a shared responsibility.

We’re inspired to see partners like BIG Pharmacy championing men’s health through meaningful outreach and prostate cancer screening activities. Every initiative like this brings us one step closer to breaking the stigma and encouraging early detection among Malaysian men. As Project Blue Dot continues to grow, we welcome more corporates, NGOs and community groups to collaborate with us in expanding access to screenings and health awareness nationwide. 💙 If your organisation would like to be part of this movement, let’s connect and make an impact together.
